E. Allin, dated Nov. 26, states that there were also four records from the Canadian Lake· head region by that date. He also said, "It would seem that this was the bigest flight of Hawk-Owls in recent decades. This is a happy thought as only a few years ago, it was consider- ed that the Hawk-Owl had become very scarce, and until the last two or three years, we had not had a flight and rarely saw an individual since the winter of 1938-1939.'' Avi- fauna! Club records, notes of interest in recent Flickers, and information in Birds of Minnesota (1936) would seem to indicate that this owl is, in limited numbers, a permanent resident of northern Minnesota, and can be seen every winter in small numbers. An increase in these numbers (5-10 re- ports) such as we had about three years ago, probably constitutes a min- or invasion which precedes by 1-3 years the large-scale invasion, such as we have this year. The Hawk-Owl in- vasion this winter, like the Goshawk invasion, is probably without prece- dent in Minnesota

2005Fall Major invasion echoing last year's record-high numbers (The Loon 77:132–140). Early north 10/10 Roseau JD, 10/21 St. Louis FJN. Unlike last winter, none strayed outside of the coniferous forest zone.

2008Winter101 A respectable 35–40 individuals reported north in a rectangle formed by Carlton and Lake in the Northeast and Roseau and Clearwater in the Northwest. Eleven individuals tallied statewide on CBCs. Totals were up somewhat from previous two years, but paltry compared to the mega-invasion of 2004–2005 when 154 were estimated in December alone including a North American CBC record of 42 on the Sax-Zim count (see The Loon 77:132–140). Unexpected was a brief visit by a single bird that pushed south into Nicollet where it was initially found by a non-birder and was well-documented ph. ChH, ph. RMD.
2009Spring7 Reported in Beltrami, Cass, Koochiching, Lake, Lake of the Woods, Roseau, St. Louis as late as 4/25 Lake of the Woods TDi. High count 4/21 Lake of the Woods (6) TDi.

2009Winter14 Seeing what was becoming an invasion year, MLH compiled records of 96 individuals in 14 north counties between 10/22/2009 and 3/17/2010. A review of all electronic records submitted for the winter period revealed approximately the following number of owls: 33 in December, 40 in January, and 34 in February for a total 1/7. No doubt this total includes some birds counted more than once; nonetheless, the actual total represents about the 5th highest invasion for the state (see Svingen and Nicoletti, The Loon 77:3). Most unusual were reports 1/20 and 1/31 Norman (East of Ada at intersection of CR24/CR27) fide JMJ. Recorded on 10 CBCs statewide.
